NULC Students Hit The Catwalk

Students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC) Foundation degree (Fd) in Contemporary Art Practice are joining forces with some of the most famous names in fashion to raise money for charity.

Students Lauren Spragg and Amy Hill are busy preparing for the prestigious Variety Club’s Variety in Fashion Show, held at the luxurious De Vere Wychwood Park Hotel in Cheshire.  Lauren and Amy are organising and styling a 10 minute catwalk slot where they will be showcasing garments from a selection of past and present Contemporary Art Practice students.

The Variety in Fashion Show is in its third year and will see the latest collections in menswear and womensware, from top designers including Hugo Boss, Armani Jeans, Paul Smith and many more hit the catwalk.  The designer collections will sit alongside collections from local boutiques, couture garments and outfits designed and made by the talented NULC students.

After the glittering catwalk show, you will be able to indulge in a spot of shopping where you can purchase garments from the collections as well as fashion accessories and health and beauty products.

The event is organised by the Variety Club, a charity which raises money to improve the lives of children and young people in need of help.  The event will be taking place on Thursday 12 May at 7pm, tickets are priced at £15 each including a champagne reception and buffet.  To book tickets or to find out more about the event call 01782 213500.

NULC students ‘let the cat out of the bag’

16 students from the Foundation degree (Fd) in Graphics and Digital Design at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) have raised over £300 for charity.

The enterprising students collectively named '16 degrees' launched their limited edition merchandise at NULC yesterday.  The 16 students came up with a range of designs based on quirky slogans, such as ‘better late than never’ and ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. The 16 designs were very popular amongst staff and students at NULC with one design of tote bag; ‘Let the cat out of the bag’ totally selling out.

As well as the stall at NULC, the students also launched an online shop www.16degrees.net and will be selling the remainder of their designs at Staffordshire University on Monday 11 April from 11.30am.  All profits will be donated to local charity University Hospital North Staffordshire (UHNS).

Products on offer at NULC included tote bags for £3, t-shirts for £10 and screen prints for £12.  Anyone wanting to get hold of one of the limited edition items is encouraged to visit www.16degrees.net before they totally sell out.

Students put NULC stamp on pre-school playground

A group of five Foundation degree (Fd) in Contemporary Arts students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) attended an unveiling of their latest work designed for a local pre-school.

The students were asked by St Peters with St Andrews pre-school in Weston Coyney, to re-design and improve the overall look of the pupils’ playground area. Staff at the pre-school informed the five NULC students on what they would like to achieve. The students then presented their ideas which aimed to increase social interaction and the choice of activities for the pre-school pupils to participate in.

The local Mayor and Mayoress unveiled the fantastic newly improved playground on Tuesday 5 March.

Talented design students create T-shirts for charity

A team of design students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College are designing, producing and selling limited edition t-shirts, bags and screen-prints to raise money for local charity University Hospital North Staffordshire (UHNS).

Ben Pritchard, aged 23 from Sandbach is the Creative Director of 16 Degrees. He said: “Our ideas have come from everyday saying, childhood memories and everyday objects. We like to think we’ve created a range of designs that everyone can relate to and have fun with.”

Samantha Munro, aged 20 from Packmoor, is part of the 16 Degrees design team. She said: “I chose the saying ‘better late than never’ as it totally applies to me, I’m never on time!”

The students have set up a website, www.16degrees.net, where the general public can look at how the group came up with the designs and view the creative process in action.

16 Degrees comprises of a group of 16 students, ranging from ages 20 to 35, on the Foundation degree (Fd) in Graphics and Digital Design at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC). Richard Hunter, Curriculum Leader for the Foundation degree (Fd) in Graphics and Digital Design, said: “This project is a great way for students to build up industry skills such as working in a team and communicating effectively. I’m very proud of what they’ve achieved so far and I’m hoping they will raise lots of money for the UHNS charity.”

The Students will be selling their limited edition design printed, t-shirts, bags and posters at Newcastle-under-Lyme College on Thursday 7 April from 11am until 3pm and at Staffordshire University Students’ Union (Stoke campus) on Monday 11 April from 11.30 until 15.30.
